• On 15 May 1881 his daughter Gertrude's baptism certificate said he was a coachman and he lived in Upper Tooting, Surrey, England. 8
• On 5 Apr 1891 he appeared on the census at Hugh Street, Pimlico, London as a 45-year-old coachman, groom. 5
• On 31 Mar 1901 James appeared on the census at The Hunter's Inn, Woodley, Hants as a 56-year-old pub keeper working on his own account. 6
• On 5 May 1901 his daughter Edith Agnes's marriage certificate said he was an inn keeper. 9
• On 2 Apr 1911 he appeared on the census at The Alma Inn, Upham, Hants as a 65-year-old inn keeper and licensed victualler. 7
James married Ellen ROLFE, daughter of Joseph ROLFE and Caroline CHILDS, on 1 Aug 1870 in St. Paul's Chapel, Writtle, Essex.1 2 (Ellen ROLFE was born on 4 Feb 1849 in Writtle, Essex 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 12 and died on 11 Mar 1922 13 14.)
• Their witnesses were Mary Day and Joseph Day. 2
