The most likely explanation is that Martha, his mother, named the people who lived in the house, rather than those who were actually resident on the night. 3
• On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census at 136 Alma Row, Usworth, Co. Durham as a 32-year-old coal miner. 5
