• On 31 Mar 1901 Henry appeared on the census at 37 South Grove (now Southern Grove), Mile End, London as a 5-year-old daughter named Mary. There is no record of a Mary Rands being born in Mile End in 1895 and the 1911 census shows his mother having borne 11 children, which is correct if Mary and Henry were the same person. The most likely explanation is that the 1901 census-taker misread a hand-written Henry as Mary and then changed the gender. ¹

• On 2 Apr 1911 he appeared on the census at 21 Merceron Houses, Globe Road, Bethnal Green, Middx as a 15-year-old line ruler for a printers. ²
