• On 2 Apr 1871 Thomas appeared on the census at Butchers Lane, Newhaven, Sussex as a 15-year-old labourer. 4
• On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census as a 25-year-old seaman on board the steam ship "Paris", which docked overnight at Dieppe. 5
• On 29 Jan 1882 his marriage certificate said that he was a bachelor of full age and a mariner. His father, Thomas William Nicholls, deceased, had been a drayman. 6
• His death was registered during the quarter ended Sep 1887 at the Steyning registration district, with GRO reference vol 2b, page 188. 3
Thomas married Emma SUTTON, daughter of Edward SUTTON and Unknown, on 29 Jan 1882 in St. Peter's Church, Deptford, London.1 (Emma SUTTON was born about 1849 in Brentford, Middx 7 8.)
