Events • On 6 Jun 1841 he appeared on the census at Great Oxney Green, Writtle, Essex as an infant aged 6 months. 4 • On 30 Mar 1851 James appeared on the census at Cooksmill Green, Roxwell, Essex as a 10-year-old scholar. 5 • On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census on HMS Monarch, No 10 Dock, Portsmouth, Hants as a 30-year-old bandsman. 6 • On 2 Apr 1871 he also appeared on the census at "Who'd have thought it", 24 Surrey Street, Portsea, Hants as a 30-year-old musician with his family. Most likely he was actually on the ship, but his family showed him as being present with them. 7 • On 3 Apr 1881 James appeared on the census on board HMS Minotaur, anchored off Gibraltar as a 42-year-old bandsman. 8 • On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at 47 Brunswick Street, Maidstone, Kent as a 60-year-old tailor working on his own account from home. Also in the household was a boarder, Walter J. Foord, probably related to James's wife. 9 • On 2 Apr 1911 James appeared on the census at Thrift Cottages, Knoxbridge, Kent as a 71-year-old navy pensioner who was paralysed. He was shown as having been married for 21 years with 11 children, 3 of whom had died. This is probably the total number of his children, rather than those of his current marrisge. It may also include his wife's children by a previous marriage. Wlater james Foord was still boarding with them. He may have been Emily's child by a previous marriage. 10 James married Clara ROLFE, daughter of James ROLPH and Ann HILLIARD, about 1869 in Portsea, Hants.1 (Clara ROLFE was born in 1850 in Writtle, Essex 7 11 12 and died in 1874 in Portsea, Hants 13.)
• Their marriage was registered during the quarter ended Sep 1869 at the Portsea Island registration district, with GRO reference Vol 2b, Page 701. 1 James next married Julia ANSELL, daughter of George ANSELL and Rebecca MERRETT, about 1880 in Portsea, Hants.2 (Julia ANSELL was born about 1860 in Bishops Waltham, Hants 14 15.)
• Their marriage was registered during the quarter ended Dec 1880 at the Portsea Island registration district, with GRO reference Vol 2b, Page 964. 2 James next married Emily FOORD about 1890 in Maidstone, Kent.3 (Emily FOORD was born about 1832 in Pluckley, Kent 10 16.)
