• On 2 Apr 1871 she appeared on the census in Newick, Sussex as a 23-year-old chip maker. 3
• On 3 Apr 1881 Mary appeared on the census at The Green, Newick, Sussex as a 32-year-old dressmaker. 4
• On 5 Apr 1891 she appeared on the census at 9 Clairville Grove, Kensington, Middx as a 43-year-old single woman who lets apartments to lodgers and whose name is given as Mary Peirce. Mary Peirce Coley does not appear in the 1891, 1901 or 1911 censuses or the death indices. Mary Peirce appears in all these, but does not appear in any earlier censuses. It is reasonable to assume that these two people are the same woman. 5
