• On 7 Apr 1861 James appeared on the census at London Road, Ringmer, Sussex as a 55-year-old former agricultural labourer who had been blinded in an accident. He was living with his sister Mary and her husband. 3
• On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census at Dodson's Corner, Ringmer, Sussex as a 63-year-old former agricultural labourer who had been blinded in a gun accident. He was living with his brother-in-law George packham. 4
• On 3 Apr 1881 James appeared on the census at Blunt Lane, Ringmer, Sussex as a 75-year-old visitor in the home of Charlotte Durrants. He was recorded as being blind. 5
• His death was registered during the quarter ended Jun 1883 at the Lewes registration district, with GRO reference vol 2b, page 114a. 6
